Maybe Apple Should Pay Attention to Amazon, After All

Some interesting context for federal regulators looking at Apple’s monopoly position in digital music: New data show Amazon making a bit of headway in its attempt to take on iTunes.

Amazon’s MP3 store now has 12 percent of the digital download market in the U.S., according to NPD Group. That’s up from eight percent a year ago. But those sales don’t seem to have come at Apple’s expense: NPD puts the iTunes market share at 70 percent, compared with 69 percent a year ago.

So who’s losing market share? NPD hasn’t explained (yet). But based on previous surveys from the data company, I assume it’s some combination of Rhapsody, Microsoft’s (MSFT) Zune marketplace and Napster. And if I had to guess, I’d point to Napster, which has really struggled since Best Buy (BBY) purchased it in 2008.

UPDATE: I was wrong! Looks like Amazon’s gain stems primarily from Rhapsody’s loss. The music subscription service, which also sells downloads, saw its share drop from four percent to 1.3 percent within the last year (see table below; click to enlarge).

In any case, the new data show Amazon making steady, grinding progress. Which makes reports of Apple strong-arming music labels that gave exclusives to Amazon a little more interesting.

Meanwhile, Apple (AAPL) remains the biggest player in music retail, period. NPD says it now owns 28 percent of the U.S. market, up from 24 percent a year ago. Amazon (AMZN) is also up, from nine percent to 12 percent, which ties Wal-Mart (WMT) for second place.

Why iPhone Hasn’t Sold Well in China

Many have taken guesses about why official sales of the iPhone in China have been lackluster, despite the device’s popularity in other markets, with some suggesting that the long delay of the handset’s official launch in China is to blame, while others say it’s the iPhone’s high price tag or the fact that Chinese iPhones don’t have wireless Internet capabilities.

But a recent survey of 2,000 mobile users in China between the ages of 22 and 32 by China Market Research Group, or CMR, suggests that the cause of the iPhone’s performance in China may stem from the relative unpopularity of Apple’s (AAPL) partner, China Unicom, among its target users, as well as a lack of desire among those users to sign up for two-year contracts and subscribe to 3G services.

Accel Keeps Its Wallet Open: Lookout Grabs $11 Million in Funding and Also Adds Execs

Accel Partners has been pretty busy handing over giant wads of dough to start-ups this week–and today, it is focusing its largesse on San Francisco-based Lookout, a smart phone security provider.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based venture firm will be the lead investor in an $11 million Series B funding for Lookout, which offers solutions to protect the phone from malware and viruses, back up and restore valuable data and help users find their phone in the event it is lost or stolen.

Accel Partner Ping Li will join the start-up’s board.

Lookout currently works only on phones using Google (GOOG) Android, Research in Motion (RIMM) BlackBerry and Microsoft (MSFT) Windows Mobile operating systems.

Previous venture investors, Khosla Ventures and Trilogy Partnership, are also participating. The pair, along with angel investors such as Chris Sacca, had already put $5.5 million into Lookout late last year. It was founded as Flexilis in 2007.

The company said the former CEO of Vontu and executive at Symantec (SYMC), Joseph Ansanelli, would become Chairman of Lookout, and that it had also added some other execs, including a former Yahoo (YHOO) staffer. Ansanelli has been an angel investor in Lookout.

Here’s the official press release:

Lookout Closes $11 Million in Series B Funding Led by Accel Partners

Explosive Growth in Smartphone Market Underscores Need for Mobile Security

SAN FRANCISCO–May 18, 2010–Lookout, the leader in smartphone security, today announced an $11 Million Series B round of funding led by Accel Partners with Khosla Ventures and Trilogy Partnership also participating. The company also announced that it has added several new executives to its leadership team, including former CEO of Vontu and executive at Symantec, Joseph Ansanelli, as Chairman of the Board.

“The smartphone market is exploding, and consumers are downloading third-party apps by the hundreds, making security an increasingly vital component of the mobile market,” said Ping Li, Partner at Accel Partners, who will join the board. “Consumers need to know that their applications, their data, and their phone itself are protected. We are excited to work with Lookout as they continue to extend their lead in this dynamic market.”

The global smartphone market grew more than 50% during the past year and as a result, consumers have been introduced to thousands of third-party applications across leading mobile platforms through app stores and downloaded sites. The Android Marketplace alone gives consumers access to more than 50,000 applications. While they enjoy the benefits of these applications, consumers are often unaware of the risks that accompany their increased data and application usage. Similar to the PC market, as consumers do more with their phones, they need protection from threats such as mobile viruses and malware, data loss and theft of the phone itself.

Lookout has developed cross-platform, cloud-connected applications that immediately identify and block threats before they compromise a consumer’s mobile phone, backup and restore mobile content, find a lost or stolen phone and wipe data from a phone if necessary. Available now on more than 400 mobile networks in 170 countries, Lookout prevents thousands of malicious applications, finds countless lost phones and restores important information for users every month.

“We are thrilled to receive such enthusiastic support from Accel Partners,” said John Hering, CEO and founder of Lookout. “Their backing is recognition of Lookout’s accomplishments to date and a testament to the importance of this market. With this additional financing, we’ll continue to invest in new technology and infrastructure so that we can provide the most comprehensive smartphone protection available to millions of consumers worldwide.”

Lookout Executive Additions

Joseph Ansanelli brings his extensive knowledge of security to Lookout as Chairman of the Board. Prior to Lookout, he served as CEO and co-founder of Vontu, turning the company into the leading provider of data loss prevention solutions before being acquired by Symantec in 2007.

In addition to Ansanelli, Lookout has also added several key members to the company’s executive team including Eric Bothwell as vice president of engineering, who formerly held engineering leadership positions at Vontu and Symantec; Chris Jones as vice president of product management, formerly senior director of portfolio product management at Symantec; and Julie Herendeen as vice president of marketing, formerly vice president of network products and advertising solutions for Yahoo! Inc.

Booyah Moolah: Social Gaming Company Behind MyTown Gets $20 Million in Funding

A mobile social game company called Booyah, best known for its MyTown iPhone app, announced that it has raised $20 million, mostly from Accel Partners.

The giant round is one of many doled out recently for social start-ups, such as Groupon, in which Accel also invested.

Accel’s Jim Breyer will also join Booyah’s board.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company has raised $9 million in venture funding until now, mostly from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers’ $100 million iFund, as well as DAG Ventures.

Both are participating in the new round.

Made up of a team of gaming industry veterans, especially from Blizzard Entertainment, which is now part of Activision Blizzard, Booyah has been on a roll, reaching two million users for MyTown.

MyTown, which is about to come out with a new version, is one of the most popular location-based social games on the Apple (AAPL) mobile devices.

That compares with other social check-in services, such as Foursquare (just over one million) and Gowalla (250,000).

MyTown is slightly different than these services, though, focusing on gaming in its check-ins and virtual goods versus a more discovery element.

Here’s the official press release from Booyah:

ACCEL PARTNERS CHECKS INTO BOOYAH: LEADS $20 MILLION FUNDING ROUND

Popular Location-Based Media Company Adds Industry Luminary Jim Breyer to Board of Directors

Palo Alto, Calif.–May 17, 2010–Booyah, creator of the popular location-based mobile app MyTown, has closed a $20 million round of financing and added renowned investor, Jim Breyer to its Board of Directors. Existing investors Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and DAG Ventures also participated in the round.

Since launching in December, MyTown rocketed upwards of more than 2 million users growing at over 100,000 new users week over week. MyTown passed 60 million check-ins and 250 million virtual item impressions a month. An immersive and addicting experience, users of MyTown spend an average of 70 minutes per day, establishing Booyah as the leader in real-world interactive entertainment.

“Booyah is at the epicenter of the fastest growing markets today–mobile, social, and interactive gaming,” stated Jim Breyer, Partner, Accel Partners. “Not only are they a next-generation entertainment company, but they are bridging the gap between consumers and businesses. The Booyah management team has both the passion and talent to innovate and create a wholly unique experience.”

Breyer currently is the lead & presiding Director of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc, (WMT), a Director of Dell, Inc (DELL), and a long-time investor & board member of companies such as Brightcove, Facebook, Etsy, and Marvel Entertainment (MVL).

“We are thrilled to work with a world-class partner such as Accel Partners with their experience across social, mobile and entertainment,” said Keith Lee, CEO, Booyah. :The combination of Jim’s expertise in real world retail and cutting edge digital media mirrors our dedication to creating the most compelling real-world experiences. MyTown is a bold step to achieving this goal and we have very exciting plans in the near future to move far beyond the check-in.”

Unique to Booyah is their ability to blur the lines between the real and digital worlds. With extensive experience in the traditional gaming industry and cutting-edge mobile technologies, Booyah is poised to create new forms of entertainment for the masses and revolutionize the consumer experience. In the massively popular app MyTown users can check in at real-world locations using GPS features to unlock rewards. Players can purchase, upgrade and collect rent on their properties, enjoying MyTown ownership of their favorite real-life places.

The Long, Weird Cops and Robbers Tale of Gizmodo, Apple and the 4G iPhone

Here’s the definitive tale, so far, of iPhonegate. It comes via the search warrant affidavit filed by the San Mateo cops, who were investigating Gizmodo’s purchase of a 4G iPhone prototype as a felony.

A lot of this stuff has been out in one form or another, but the narrative is pretty fascinating. If you plow through the document embedded at the bottom of the post, bear in mind that it’s a tale told by Matthew Broad, a detective in San Mateo County Sheriff’s office. So it’s possible that other parts of the story, and/or different versions of the same story, may still end up coming to light.

Among the highlights:

  • Apple knew that Brian Hogan, the 21-year-old who found the iPhone, had the thing because his roommate, Katherine Martinson, called and told the company he had it. Her reasoning, according to Apple (AAPL) security chief Rick Orloff: “Suspect Hogan connected the stolen iPhone to her computer and she believed that Apple would eventually trace the iPhone back to her via IP addresses. Therefore she contacted Apple in order to absolve herself of criminal responsibility.”
  • Martinson told police that Hogan had offered the phone to Gizmodo, AOL’s (AOL) Engadget.com and PC World. While Gizmodo owner Gawker Media had previously said it paid $5,000 for access to the phone, the affidavit is a bit fuzzier. Martinson says Hogan told her Gizmodo offered $10,000 for the gadget and later said he’d received $5,000 from Gizmodo and a total of $8,500. But she wasn’t clear where the other $3,500 came from. “Martinson said Hogan also told her that he will receive a cash bonus from Gizmodo.com in July if and when Apple makes an official product announcement regarding the new iPhone.”
  • There’s a long cops-and-robbers interlude where police show up at Hogan’s house, but he takes off and is eventually tracked down at his father’s place. In the end, Hogan and Thomas Warner, another roommate, help the cops retrieve a computer, a flash drive and other equipment they’d removed from their place “in order to ‘protect’” Hogan.
  • Apple CEO Steve Jobs did indeed reach out to Gizmodo to ask for the phone back. Here’s editor Brian Lam’s response to Jobs, via email (click to enlarge):

And here’s the entire affidavit, which we’re able to see because a group of media companies, including CNET, Bloomberg, Wired and the Los Angeles Times, petitioned a California judge to unseal it. Gawker Media, via COO Gaby Darbyshire, declined to comment on the affidavit and its contents.

Chill Out! Obama Doesn’t Hate Your iPad

First things first: We already knew that Barack Obama was Blackberry/PC guy, right? Perhaps even a Zune guy? So his “admission” that he doesn’t know how to work an iPod shouldn’t be a total shock.

More interesting: Wouldn’t it be weird if the President of the United States gave a speech about the education gap, made a passing reference to technology’s ability to distract us — and then the short attention span media made it look like he was coming for your Twitter account?

Not weird, you say? Just kind of predictable?

OK. So here, for the record, are Obama’s prepared remarks for his commencement address at Hampton University yesterday. It clocks in at more than 2,000 words (the speech he actually delivered was a tiny bit longer), but if you slug your way through it, you’ll find that your iPad is probably safe.

Don’t like to read? No problem — you can also watch the 22-minute speech. The White House posted it on its Web site last night.

Calling All Yahoos–Or Are They Calling Demand Media?

The temperature is rising between Yahoo and Demand Media as several execs have or are expected to move from the Internet giant to the social media start-up.

In March, Demand pulled off a major coup by hiring Yahoo’s head of U.S. advertising sales, Joanne Bradford.

Today, Bradford’s program manager, Sarah Northern, resigned from the Silicon Valley company and said she is heading to the Santa Monica, Calif.-based Demand.

More significantly and also today, Erika Nardini (pictured here), VP of brand packaging at Yahoo (YHOO), announced to her staff that she is leaving the company, and she is widely expected to go to Demand too.

When called by BoomTown, a Yahoo spokesman confirmed Nardini’s departure.

In a statement Yahoo said:

“Erika Nardini, VP of Yahoo! packaging group, has resigned from Yahoo!. On an interim basis, Mollie Spilman, Yahoo!’s senior vice president of B2B marketing, will assume Erika’s responsibilities and continue to run B2B marketing. Mollie will continue to drive the strong momentum we have in packaging, and how we service and deliver innovation to our customers and partners. We thank Erika for her contributions to Yahoo! and wish her success in the future.”

Nardini, who is well-liked by the sales force, was hired at Yahoo by Bradford; both are former ad execs at Microsoft (MSFT).

Sources at Yahoo said top execs are furious at what they consider a raid on talent by Demand.

But Bradford is legally disallowed to poach execs, and sources within the ranks said many were seeking the jobs without prompting.

Actually, such movement is quite typical at Internet companies, especially if a top exec like Bradford leaves. Often, many move after the initial departure and usually to the same company.

Yahoo is currently on the hunt for a replacement for Bradford, a search being led by Spencer Stuart’s Jim Citrin.

Aiee! Internet Explorer’s Market Share Melting.

The slow, steady decline of Microsoft Internet Explorer continues apace with the ubiquitous browser charting another market share low in April. According to new data from Net Applications, IE ended the month with 59.95 percent of the browser market–down from 60.65 percent in March and 67.77 percent from the same time last year.

This is the first time IE’s share has ever fallen below 60 percent.

Meanwhile, Mozilla’s Firefox, Apple’s (AAPL) Safari and Google’s (GOOG) Chrome all made small gains, apparently at IE’s expense. Chrome posted the largest of the bunch, rising 0.6 points to 6.73 percent. Firefox’s market share rose 0.07 points to 24.59 percent. And Safari’s increased just 0.06 points to 4.7 percent, a surprisingly underwhelming gain for a browser that ships not just on the Mac, but on the iPhone, iPod touch and now the iPad as well. (Click chart below to enlarge.)

Yes, IE’s month-over-month drop is piddling. But the year-over-year decrease is worth noting because the rate of decline in IE’s market share is clearly accelerating. The browser has lost nearly eight percent market share since April 2009. And it has lost nearly 20 percent since April 2008, when its market share was over 77 percent. Clearly, IE 8, while largely well-received, hasn’t done much to reverse the overall decline of Microsoft’s (MSFT) browser.

Hard to believe that IE held an estimated 95 percent of the browser market in 2003.
