YouTube Dips Its Toe Into Live Streaming

Google’s YouTube is starting its long-awaited move into live video streaming this morning with a limited test of its new platform: Two days of scheduled live programs from four partner channels–Howcast, Next New Networks, Rocketboom and Young Hollywood. The results of the test will help determine when the live-streaming capability will be rolled out to additional partners. Watching closely will be current players in the space, including Livestream and Ustream.

MetaCafe Grabs Action Sports Without Paying a Penny

The online video shakeout is happening, though not as quickly as you might have thought two years ago: Instead of going away overnight, video sites that aren’t YouTube or Hulu are quietly circling each other. Everyone talks to everyone about a potential deal, though few of them actually get consummated.

Here’s one that did: MetaCafe has bought Action Sports, without laying out any cash. MetaCafe CEO Erick Hachenburg won’t put a value on the deal, but says it was an equity transaction between the two private companies.

So what does he get for his equity? In addition to the four million visitors that Action Sports’ Go211 gets a month, MetaCafe will also get a new chief revenue officer, in the form of former Action Sports CEO Sean Aruda.

Hachenburg will keep Go211 operating, but the real goal is to use the sports sites’ video to stock a new vertical for MetaCafe itself, expanding on a strategy the company has been pursuing for a while. Meanwhile MetaCafe, which came close to a Yahoo (YHOO) sale in the months following Google’s (GOOG) YouTube buy a few years ago, is staying independent, despite hiring bankers Think Equity to shop the company/pursue “strategic investors” last year.

Why does Digg have a new design and a new CEO? Here’s one answer, via a handy chart.

This one comes from Christopher Mascari, a Gawker Media marketing guy, and it illustrates the blog network’s traffic from social media sites. Less than a year ago, Digg was the single most important social site for Gawker, Gizmodo, Jalopnik et al. Now it has been eclipsed by the likes of Facebook, Twitter and, a little surprisingly, StumbleUpon. And note that Reddit, Condé Nast’s “Digg clone,” is catching up as well:

The other big takeaway from the data is the story that many publishers have been telling in the past year or so: Social traffic is becoming as important, or more so, than search traffic from the likes of Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO). Last fall Gawker was getting 10 million visits a month from social sites; now that number is up to 20 million. And Facebook, at 7.7 million visits, now represents more than a third of that number:

Walkman (Temporarily) Outsells iPod (In Japan)

Remember the Walkman? Evidently, Japan does, because Sony’s (SNE) digital music player has outsold Apple’s (AAPL) iPod there for the first time in more than four years, according to research outfit BCN.

Sony’s share of the market for digital music players in Japan rose to 47.8 percent during August, surpassing the 44 percent captured by Apple. “This is the first time that the Walkman outsold the iPod in monthly sales [since Apple launched the device],” said BCN analyst Eiji Mori.

Sadly for Sony this victory will likely be a short-lived one. With the latest iPod refresh now official, consumers who postponed their purchases in anticipation of new Apple hardware will help the company dethrone Sony once again.

Mark Cuban on “Entourage”

Of course, it makes perfect sense for Mark Cuban (pictured here) to appear in a very long and involved cameo as himself on the HBO original comedy series, “Entourage.”

Heck, the fun-loving Internet billionaire could easily slip into the pack of young Hollywood dudes on the show and seem part of the gang.

Cuban–who is always up to some kind of amusing stunt (for example, see his dance stylings on “Dancing With the Stars” in 2007)–actually has already been in two episodes on the premium cable television service and it looks like he will also make the finale.

The story line has Cuban vying to nab a tequila company in Mexico out from under the nose of a very befuddled Turtle.
